Master’s Research Award

Purpose of the award

To recognize the excellence of a substantial work of master’s-level research and its contribution to the information field.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed their master’s thesis in Library and Information Science or a related field in a Canadian higher education institution during the current or last calendar year (e.g., dissertations completed in 2023 or 2024 are eligible for the 2024 award). A CAIS/ACSI membership is not required.

Nomination process

Applicants must submit a document of no more than four (4) pages, including a summary of the research work, which may be a thesis, major research paper, substantial project, or other non-traditional research output; a description of its significance for the information field; and a link to the work. Additionally, applicants must include a letter from a faculty member attesting to its quality and contribution to the information field.

Submitting the nomination

Nomination documents must be submitted as attachments in pdf or word format in a single email to awards@cais-acsi.ca, with the subject line “[Nominee last name] Master’s Research Award 2024.” The deadline is April 15, 2024, midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). We welcome submissions in English or French.

Selection process

The nominations will be examined by a jury of CAIS members. At the outset of deliberations, jury members shall report any potential conflict of interest related to the nominees and excuse themselves from the selection process if necessary.

Selection Criteria

  • Contribution to theory, knowledge, methodology, or application in the information field, broadly considered
  • Quality of expression

Nature of the award

The award consists of a certificate to be presented to the winner at the CAIS annual conference, along with a prize of $500 CAD. The recipient authors shall also be given the opportunity to present the work at the conference.

Prix d’excellence en recherche – niveau maîtrise

Objectif

Reconnaître l’excellence d’un travail substantiel de recherche de niveau maîtrise et sa contribution au domaine de l’information.

Critères d’admissibilité

Les personnes nominées doivent avoir terminé leur maîtrise en bibliothéconomie et sciences de l’information ou dans un domaine connexe dans un établissement d’enseignement supérieur canadien au cours de l’année civile en cours ou de la dernière année civile (p. ex., les personnes ayant obtenues leur diplôme en 2023 ou 2024 sont admissibles pour le prix de 2024). Une adhésion à l’ACSI n’est pas requise.

Préparation de la nomination

Le dossier doit inclure un lien vers le travail ainsi qu’un texte d’au plus quatre (4) pages comprenant un du travail de recherche. Ce dernier peut être un mémoire de maîtrise, une publication évaluée par les pairs, ou tout autre travail de recherche majeur, ou non- conventionnel. Le texte doit aussi souligner l’importance de la recherche pour la discipline. La nomination doit être accompagnée d’une lettre d’un membre du corps professoral attestant de la qualité du travail et de sa contribution à la discipline.

La nomination doit être soumise en pièces jointes en format pdf ou Word dans un seul courriel à awards@cais-acsi.ca ayant comme objet : « [Nom de famille du candidat] Prix d’excellence en recherche – niveau maîtrise [Année du concours] ». La date limite est le 15 avril de l’année du concours, à minuit, heure normale de l'Est (EST). La nomination peut être soumise en anglais ou en français.

Le prix consiste en un certificat remis au gagnant lors du congrès annuel de l’ACSI, ainsi qu’un prix de $500 CAD. Les auteurs gagnants auront également la possibilité de présenter le travail lors du congrès.

Emerging Leader Award

Purpose of the award

The purpose of this award is to recognize an early-career researcher or practitioner who has contributed to the advancement of the information field in Canada or internationally through their research, practice, or service.

Eligibility

Nominees must have graduated no more than five years prior to the application date, and either have a main affiliation to, or be a graduate from, a Canadian school, department, or faculty offering an ALA-accredited graduate program.

Nomination process

Nominations must consist of the nominee's CV and two (2) letters of support, not written by the nominee. The nomination letters should highlight the nominee’s contributions to the field and explain how these contributions merit recognition.

Nomination documents must be submitted as attachments in pdf or word format in a single email to awards@cais-acsi.ca, with the subject line “[Nominee last name] Emerging Leader Award 2024.” The deadline is April 15, 2024, midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST).   • Demonstrated commitment to leadership in the information field, such as through association involvement, service, mentorship, or project management
  • Involvement in the Canadian Association of Information Science, broadly considered, such as through past conference attendance, presentation, or participation as a moderator

Nature of the award

The award consists in a 500$ cash prize and a plaque to be presented to the winner during the CAIS annual conference.

Prix - leader émergent

Objectif

L’objectif de ce prix est de reconnaître un chercheur ou un praticien en début de carrière qui a contribué à l’avancement du domaine de l’information au Canada ou à l’étranger par ses recherches, sa pratique ou son service.

Critères d’admissibilité

Les personnes nominées doivent avoir obtenu leur diplôme au cours des cinq années qui précèdent l’année du concours. Elles doivent être diplômées de ou principalement affiliées à une école, un département ou une Faculté canadienne offrant un programme d’études supérieures agréé par l’ALA.

Préparation de la nomination

Les nominations doivent être composées du CV de la personne nominée et de deux (2) lettres d’appui non écrites par la personne nominée. Les lettres d’appui doivent mettre en évidence les contributions de la personne nominée et expliquer pourquoi elles méritent d’être reconnues.

Les contributions à l’ACSI telles que la participation soutenue aux congrès seront prisent en compte.

Nature du prix

Le prix consiste en une plaque remise au gagnant lors du congrès annuel de l’ACSI, ainsi qu’un prix de $500 CAD.

Doctoral Dissertation Award

Purpose of the award

To recognize the excellence of the doctoral dissertation of a recent PhD graduate and of their contribution to the information field.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed their doctoral dissertation in Library and Information Science or a related field in a Canadian higher education institution during the current or last calendar year (e.g., dissertations completed in 2023 or 2024 are eligible for the 2024 award). A CAIS/ACSI membership is not required.

Nomination process

Applicants must submit a document of no more than two (2) pages, highlighting their dissertation’s significance for the information field, and including a link to the dissertation. Additionally, applicants must include a letter from their supervisor or department director confirming that the dissertation is completed and attesting to its quality and contribution to the information field.

Submitting the nomination

Nomination documents must be submitted as attachments in pdf or word format in a single email to awards@cais-acsi.ca, with the subject line “[Nominee last name] Doctoral Dissertation Award 2024.” The deadline is April 15, 2024, midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). Career Achievement Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize the exceptional achievements of a researcher or practitioner who has greatly contributed to the advancement of the information field in Canada or internationally.

Eligibility

Nominees must have worked in the field of information science as a researcher or practitioner for 15 years or more. Nominees must have a main affiliation in Canada, or be a Canadian working abroad.

  • Evidence of effective leadership, broadly considered, in the information field

Les personnes nominées doivent avoir travaillé dans le domaine des sciences de l’information en tant que chercheur ou praticien pendant 15 ans ou plus. Elles doivent être principalement affiliées à une organisation canadienne ou être une personne citoyenne du Canada travaillant à l’étranger.

Student-to-CAIS/ACSI and Best Paper by a Practitioner

Paper proposals by graduate students and practitioners will be considered for these awards. The Student-to-CAIS/ACSI award includes a monetary prize. Both awardees will have the opportunity to publish the full manuscript in the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science / La Revue canadienne des sciences de l’information et de bibliothéconomie. In order to be considered for these awards, please indicate if you are a student or practitioner when submitting your proposal. Winners will be selected based on their extended abstracts.
